they said. For the last 45 minutes I've been looking at this blank piece
of paper wondering what would be of interest to you.
Well here goes….. At 34, I
purchased my first instrument, an acoustic guitar.
Within three months I was playing in pubs and
restaurants in Birmingham. Twelve months later I became a bass player in a
local band doing loads of gigs. Three years later
I'd had enough of the big city sold my instruments, purchased a
tenor saxophone and moved to Exmouth in Devon. Taking a break from music
for three years, by which time
my saxophone playing had moved on quite well, (nothing like Charlie
Parker, or Ben Webster you understand). Like most people I listen to all
sorts of music from classical, reggae, jazz, blues, soul, rock, pop etc. But never really
understood what written
music was all about,
seeing notation on pieces of paper was like looking
at another language. I contacted
the Royal School
of Music and set about getting
my grades in practical and theory of music, which I'm pleased to say I
achieved. People always ask is it necessary
to understand
the
theory and practical
side of music,
before you can play
in a band.
I say “ NO”! If you're interested
you'll pick up
a few basic
chords, then the desire to
play should carry
you through. I did my grades for
personal satisfaction and
to gain more
knowledge. Now where
was I? oh yes!
The desire to get back out was really strong and a nine-piece
band was formed for about three years. It was after this, the guys and I
got together to form Blurred Vision. For me this is the most
exciting band. We have the same commitment to produce the best sound, to introduce
new numbers keeping the interest
for
the band and public.
No matter what age, you're
never too old to
rock'n'roll. So get some homework done, find a band
and do your stuff. Freddie
